The palace was built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III. Originally conceived as an act of charity, it was intended to provide employment to people affected by the famine at the time. Its significance grew in 1942 during the Quit India Movement, when Mahatma Gandhi was held here by the British along with Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai and several close associates. This period firmly linked the palace to India’s freedom struggle. Their memorial shrines remain among the most poignant features associated with the history of Aga Khan.
